Our roads and transport team collectively have over 40 years of experience in the assessment, planning, design and maintenance of road networks. Our knowledge of freeways and complex interchanges, access roads, toll road facilities, BRT networks and intermodal transfer facilities, and the principles of traffic engineering that govern these designs, have been gained at some of the major consulting firms in South Africa. We have successfully delivered both new and road rehabilitation projects and infrastructure upgrade projects, with a strong focus on road safety, for organisations such as SANRAL, provincial government, major metropolitans, local municipalities and private clients. We also understand the local context of project delivery and have tailored designs, construction management and monitoring to include labour-intensive methods that impact local communities positively.
In the 1970s design was car-centric - every destination was more easily accessed via private vehicles and cities were designed around the car. Government is currently ‘rethinking’ how we move and asking the question whether public transport and the spatial environment are as welcoming to the commuter/pedestrian as the motorway is to the driver/car.
Walking and cycling have the lowest impact on the environment and are the most sustainable means of transport. We offer services in the planning and design of more integrated urban transport systems that ultimately offer an alternative to the car. Our services include public transport planning, transit-orientated development, transport management plans and the design of non-motorised transport networks. This ensures that communities and road networks are designed along sustainability principles, reducing journey times and the country’s carbon footprint in the long run.
